The second box I got also didn't work - and I took it back and got a refund.

Thanks for your kind offer - but what I might do is connect a spare serial
cable I have to the PC and just swap them at the modem.

I have to figure out what to do on the comms side - I don't think sharing
the modem is a long-term solution.
