Robert,

A couple of years ago (under OS/2 2.0 and 2.1) I wrote a number of device
drivers and applications which Raytheon (Wayland, MA) is still using to
this day for real time data acquisition off several of their radar systems.
They have been extremely happy with both the performance and reliability so
I don't think that Stephen's blanket dismissal is valid.

I wanted to answer your original post but had to pass. It's been over a
year since I last worked on this so I can no longer provide any of the
specifics - average/max data rate, hardware platform and average/min spare
time measured.

I will say that it is not something to be approached lightly. Raytheon
bought top of the line PCs, designed the extraction cards embedded within
the radar themselves, worked with one vendor to correct/enhance their PC
card design and paid for the development of several device drivers and an
awful lot of testing.

Of course, those are all one time expenses and they expect to be using this
approach for the next ten years. (Which is about how long the predecessor,
which was based on DEC hardware and RT-11, lasted).

Bill
