subject: samba making me nuts

Seems like many years ago when I first started connecting OS/2 to Linux
that samba wasn't that hard to figure out, except that I never did find
out how to get findsmb to show OS/2.

Now with v3 samba totally broken, there aren't too many supported Linux
versions that provide samba v2, and yet are new enough to support
relatively modern hardware. I've a box quite old running SuSE 8.2, and I
have both nfs and samba working fine between it and OS/2. Now that box
has gotten long in the tooth, so I've built a newer box to take its
place. It seems to stick with SuSE my only option is 9.0, as newer have
samba v3, and older doesn't support my hardware. Seems like a simple
choice. When SuSE 9.0 first came out, I installed it on a P3 system. Its
samba & nfs on that system works fine with OS/2, just like 8.2 on my
older box. Configuration was pretty simple for samba, as they both use
2.2.8a. It rubber stamped my decision to use it on my newer box.

It doesn't work on the new box, and I can't figure out what's different.
Basically I copied over all the networking config files from the older
9.0 box to the "new" one, then changed the few lines that had to be
unique, such as the netbios name and valid users lines in
/etc/samba/smb.conf.

'net view' works:
Server Name            Remark
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
\\A-865                Samba Server 2.2.8a-SuSE
\\P-T18                PC Chips OS/2
\\S1846                Samba Server 2.2.8a-SuSE

'net view \\P-T18' works (eCS):
Shared resources at \\P-T18
PC Chips OS/2
Netname      Type         Used as  Comment
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E            Disk
G            Disk
I            Disk

'findsmb' always fails to list the OS/2 system.

'net view \\S1846' works (older 9.0):
Shared resources at \\s1846
Samba Server 2.2.8a-SuSE

Netname      Type         Used as  Comment
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
downloads    Disk                  Downloads Directory
pub          Disk                  Public Directory
tmp          Disk                  /tmp

'net view \\A-865' does not work:
NET3502: OS/2 error 65 has occurred
SYS0065: Network access is denied.

'help NET3502' gives this useless response:
NET3502: OS/2 error *** has occurred.
Cause: The specified OS/2 error occurred.
Action: Correct the problem and type the command again.
For details on the original error, type HELP SYS####
where #### is the error number from the original message.

'help SYS0065' is marginally better:
SYS0065: Network access is denied.
EXPLANATION: You attempted to access a resource that is not available
to you. It is possible that:
o You do not have a valid account on the server sharing the resource.
o Your account on this server has not been granted the permissions
   necessary to access the resource.
ACTION: Make sure that you specify the correct name of the resource
that you want to use and retry the command. If you are still denied
access, contact your network administrator.

Except for the above mentioned difference due to the different
hostnames, both 9.0 boxen use the following /etc/samba/smb.conf file:
[global]
   dns proxy = no
   include = %m.encrypt
   log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
   netbios name = s1846 #a-865 (newer, dysfunctional machine)
   null passwords = yes
   preferred master = no
   security = share
   server string = Samba Server %v
   socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192
   valid users = a-865,p-t18	#p-t18,s1846 (newer, dysfunctional machine)
   workgroup = IBMPEERS
   ssl compatibility = no
   ssl require clientcert = no
   ssl require server cert = no
   ssl = no
   domain master = no
   encrypt passwords = yes
   max packet = 0
   ssl entropy bytes = 0

[downloads]
   comment = Downloads Directory
   path = /home/downloads
   read only = No

[pub]
   browseable = Yes
   comment = Public Directory
   path = /pub
   read only = No

[tmp]
   comment = /tmp
   path = /tmp

Changing encrypt passwords to no doesn't help. Both 9.0 boxen have all
samba passwords set to -n. Samba logins are all set to the hostname with
"l" appended. I hope someone can tell me what I must be overlooking.
