Actually you may wish to consider shorter rather than longer. On its
side is a perfectly legal way to mount a HD. If you have a fan in the
bottom of the front of the case anyway, the case bottom can be a great
place to mount up to about 4 drives, though the most I've done there at
once is 2. Naturally doing this requires drilling mounting holes, which
is perfectly safe to do only if the case is void of installed electronic
parts.

If you intend to buy an ATA PCI card you may wish to consisder SATA
rather than PATA. PATA is going away as an obsolete standard. SATA
cables are much more managable. Hard to guess when manufacture of PATA
will cease, but it's something you can expect someday now that new PCs
have been using only SATA for a while.
