 I still don't think of 128 meg RAM and 10 Gig virtual
 as "minimal", he says typing on a 20, 325 Meg machine ;-)
 Even the all on CD Linux - RAM release will run the GUI
 on 128 RAM.

Have you checked out www.pricewatch.com? 
Look under bare bones systems or kits.
Cutting edge stuff at under 400 dollars with case and PS
but no RAM, H.D. or CD-ROM.
They've even got some screamers burned in and tested at 
around 300 but with fewer features.

I'm guessing the external bay thing refers to the USB ports,
deceptive but than it's onlya guess.
