Hi Dan,
Quoting: Dan Ceppa to Herman Neut
Date/Time: 14-Jul-06 / 22:35:19
Subject: Z7 again
HN>> Z7 is already in use (non-fidonet zone)
DC> so, maybe they should ask for another Zone location?
Why?
Is there still any need to split Fidonet into zones?
HN>> Don't see the real problem. I expect next Z2C is Russian
HN>> (2:5020/715 perhaps?) And don't forget, Z2-R50 is shrinking too,
HN>> nevertheless the many 'dead wood'
DC> Thus, your answer is to just let it go?
Cut out the dead wood.
Cut out multiple nodelist entries.
Combine zones and regions that are almost empty.
Nothing new. We already did it in Z2 R28
Fidonet is on its return (that is reality) Of cours there will remain a lot
of die-hards ;-)
You just have to face it.
HN>> At the time R28 has gone, I ask for a nodenumber in R50 ;-) No
HN>> problem with 'Fido Over IP'
DC> Your solution isn't.
Why not?
Again: every next day, there is less need for so many zones, regions en
nets.
Do we still need zonegates? NO
Today everybody (almost) can link direct to any node whereever on this
globe.
Today we are living in 2006. Not in 1995 anymore.
And over 4 years, we live in 2010 How many Fidonet sysops are left in that
year? How many are still using POTS dial-up modem connections?
BTW: I started with Fido in 1987 (1200/75 split baudrate modem;-)
Best Regards,
Herman Neut
