if it is an internal modem, you need to open the machine and pull the modem 
card out to see the serial number sticker. it is located on the black RJ11 
phonejacks.
however, in my experiances with oem'd usr modems, it is up to the oem to 
supply the upgrades and such... the company i used to work for ran into this 
very problem with the X2 upgrades... we were told that we had to supply the 
X2 upgrade stuff but then we were unable to find where to get that needed 
material to supply our customers. needless to say, we dropped selling the oem 
modems.
