I thought that was the answer. Well, I will look JM> for it in the latest JM> Computer Shopper. I think I saw it for $495 somewhere. I think the regular price is only about $349. JM> What I like about Watcom is that I don't have to go out and buy a whole JM> new compiler to support other operating systems like Unix (can you say JM> LINUX?) The Watcom compiler that does DOS, Windows, and OS/2 does not do Unix. You might be able to kludge something up so that you can generate Unix targets, but there is no Unix-hosted Watcom compiler in the way that there are DOS-, Windows-, and OS/2-hosted compilers. Watcom does have facilities for making targets for "foreign" environments, such as NetWare NLMs or enbedded ROMs, and the run-time library is documented with regard to which functions are re-entrant and which are OS-independent. If you want a Unix compiler, you should probably look at GNU C (GCC), which is free. It is the official Linux compiler, by the way, and should be included as part of any Linux distribution in the "D" (development) component. Be aware that dynamic linkage facilities in Unix are usually considered to be a feature of the compiler, not of the operating system. This shows up in EMX, which is one of the OS/2 ports of GCC, where it is common for the C run-time library to be distributed as a DLL instead of being linked into the EXE. -- Mike --- Maximus/2 2.02* Origin: N1BEE BBS +1 401 944 8498 V.34/V.FC/V.32bis/HST16.8 (1:323/107) SEEN-BY: 12/2442 620/243 624/50 632/348 640/820 690/660 711/409 410 413 430 SEEN-BY: 711/807 808 809 934 942 949 712/353 515 713/888 800/1 7877/2809 @PATH: 323/107 150 3615/50 229/2 12/2442 711/409 808 809 934 |
