   I've tried the following combinations:

  2 Partitions - 1 x 26GB, 1 x 12GB.
  1 Partition - 38GB.
  No Partitions at all.

 In every case, LVM cannot see the drive at all.

(Partitioning done under WinXP) - I suppose I could remove the drive from it's case
and connect it temporarily to the IDE chain in the PC and use LVM to partition it.
If that would help.

  Yes exactly that.

 Another (perhaps not important) point - the drive is set to master.
