Hello, ALL. For any here who may wish to be a bit more scientific than some of the seemingly foolish prattling recently posted here, and who might want to learn more about that huge cloud of dust which came at time of WTC collapse, and dust stirred up during cleanup, a simple Google search on - "World Trade Center dust" - will turn up a number of informative publications and news articles. With a brief session there, I learned a lot. Here's a distillation, from the conclusions I arrived at after that admittedly brief research. Of a group of surveyed areas, only two small areas were found to have enough level of asbestos dust fibers to require remediation. (when they do asbestos remediation, the workers wear moon suits). Some of the spray-on fireproofing used on WTC steel was found to contain about 20% of asbestos fibers, but those were the "serpentine" type fibers, generally not considered to be as dangerous as other type asbestos fibers, due to their large size. The serpentine type includes some with fibers so long they could be (and were) woven into cloth. I saw no indication that this type material was any sort of large contributor to the "dust" problem. The two small areas where asbestos remediation was done due to the dust, this wasn't the type of fibers they were trying to clean up. In the dust layers which settled, the particles most commented upon, and which are/were known to be capable of causing respiratory problems, were dust from pulverized constituents of concrete, including silica dust from pulverized constituents of gypsum plaster and wallboard dust from pulverized products containing glass fibers All of these forms of dust are known "hazardous" materials, able to cause respiratory illness when inhaled in quantity, and at least the first two have components which are suspected carcinogens. Other good terms for info searches include silicosis and asbestosis. But only look into this kind of thing if you'd like to try and learn some of the facts, rather than blindly accepting "blame the rich capitalists" type theorizing. - - - JimH. ...
