If you pick and choose what you run, Ubuntu can run nicely on any kind of 
hardware. Some Window managers run better on slower systems, and you can 
pare down what you're running with a little bit of work.

I have a 6 year old IBM Thinkpad (1.5 ghz Celeron, 1 GB RAM) that runs 
Ubuntu nicely.
