Heck yes! We had a six-banger class at our local dirt track which got
to be practically unlimited modifications except for displacement. Some
of the 216's got to have roller cams and other goodies which pumped them
up considerable.
IF you hadn't placed in any heat by 'consolation' race time you could
choose to move up to the V-8 class (Flatheads) and run in their
Semi-feature. Some of the good ole boys would sandbag their heats and
move up and kick flathead butt for some real money in the V-8 Semi!
THen of course somebody had to spoil it by letting the Dodge Red Ram
hemi's run, and the Stovebolt boys didn't stand a chance anymore and had
to find ways to cheat in their OWN class.
Then the 265 Chevy V-8 came along and ruint the fun for everybody!
