Tapes will come out in mono, definitly.

Tuners in most mono VCR's demodulate the signal, then re-send it out
over their outputs. The converters also don't have the bandwidth to
pass the complete MTS stereo signal. It will not decode anyway. Now,
as to newer mono VCR's, I don't know. That would need some
experimentation. :-)

The MTS encoding employs sub-carriers and dBX noise reduction on those
sub-carriers. Those sub-carriers get filtered out on older Mono VCR's.
