| subject: | Rectifier Bulb? HoHoHo |
Hello, ALL. I have (or had) this "Auto Stereo Home Adapter" box, rated at 115VAC, 12-14VDC, 3 amps continuous, 5 amps switching. I ended up blowing it up - - I'll tell about that later. Took it apart, and the only thing in there which could possibly be a rectifier is this lightbulb-looking thing, with 2 bare leads out of the bottom of the glass, and wired to the circuit board. I've seen one of these before, now over 40 years ago, and it was on a little 6V trickle charger, and I ended blowing that sucker up too, while I was still in highschool. My questions - - 1. What the heck are these bulb things, and how much would a replacement for the unit at hand cost? 2. How can a rectifier with only 2 leads give good enough DC to run an auto stereo back in the home, without a lot of hum. 3. Should I pitch the thing, or could maybe some large diode or diodes be added, which would make it useable again? FWIW, in desperation, after probs with the riding mower, I used this unit for a battery charger. It worked OK, and put some charge on that there lead acid battery, but I blew it up and 'let some smoke out" when I tried to crank the mower while this makeshift "charger" was still attached. Here's the Ho Ho Ho part. - - In the spirit of the season, first two good responses (if they want the reward and providing they are willing to pay the shipping) will get "for FREE" their choice of - - a) One 32MB 168 pin SDRAM DIMM by Micron (or) b) One IDE CDROM drive, untested by me but assumed good. Probably a 12X Toshiba - gotta see what I have on hand- I know I got at least one of those.. Seasons greetings! - - - JimH. ... A merry heart doeth good like a medicine . . .
