BM> Are these doctors looking perhaps at children with FAS or FAE?
ADD and ADHD would be considered by some addiction specialists as a form
of genetic mutation, just as is the FAS or FAE. That is the only link
to them I know of, plus some of the same treatments may or may not be
beneficial.

The information necessary for a medical screening of alcoholism has been
printed in several medical journals. Among them are the Journal of
Internal Medicine, Journal of Psychiatry, and psychology. I went to the
school of medicine at the University of Washington some years back and
got the information there from them.
Since then, there have been other articles published that are directed
at doctors and others who see patients so that they can do some gross
screening and make a differential diagnosis between several disease
states.
I have also sat on hard chairs for one lecture after another in mental
health, beginning at the age of 19 as a student nurse at St. Elizabeths
Hospital in Washington, D.C. I was there for two full years as a
student nurse in the late 1940's, before the age of tranquilizers and
lithium.
That qualifies me to do some gross screening on any intake I do for
gross mental health problems according to the laws in this state.
On the other hand, the "mental health workers" take no courses at all in
anatomy and physiology, nutrition, chemistry, pharmacology, or any of
the other hard science courses I have taken as either/or a nurse or
chemical dependency counselor. They are generally unable to diagnose
addiction and most definitely not permitted to do this under the laws of
this state unless they have taken the same courses I have.
Courses which are monitored by the state agency responsible for their
quality and content......courses which will provide essentially the same
information to all who take them anyplace in this state where they have
been approved.
Believe it or not, there have been medical doctors who have taken those
same courses.
