All data on CD is in digital form, series of pits (holes) interrupted
by non pit aka "high planes" and correspinding to "0"
(zero) or 1
(one). It are actually "the slopes" between deep and high that trigger
the series "0" or "1".
Applies to Audio and video as well, even when the recording had been
made in analogue form (older recording).
So all output coming from a CD, DVD etc is digital. And at a certain
stage it has to be converted to analogue again (otherwise we wouldn't
hear a damn thinh of course).
So when the mobo (and player) have a way to send the digaital info
trough sata cable and trough the mobo to the sound card, you'll have
sound too.
I'm a bit surprised eCS supports already this method.
