AB>Well, what I meant by we should help the students out a little
AB>more, is that you should nag them to come to tutorial, by either calling
AB>parents, or you could just try to give them extra help during class!
Many of us "nag" them all the time. Class time is, or
should be, committed already; there really isn't "extra"
time available to do "extra" stuff. As to extra credit,
the idea of the course is to impart knowledge, not to come
up with a grade. In what way does the extra credit
assignment involve the student learning the course material
better? To most kids, extra credit means: "It's the end of
the marking period, I haven't done as well as I should, and
it sure would be nice if you threw me a couple points to
make it look good - I'll even work a little bit on something
to 'earn' those points". This is "LET'S MAKE A DEAL" for
grades, and has little to do with learning what you're
supposed to be learning.
AB>I am not a perfevt student! But I do try my best to pass, and if
AB>I think that i need help with one of my classes, I will ask the teacher
AB>if there is anything that I can do for extra credit, and then I will ask
AB>her if she would help me out with what ever I needed help in, so then
AB>when the test time comes around, I hopfully know what I am doing!
Other than the extra credit part, what you're saying sounds
good...
AB>I am wanting to be a computer programmer, and I am NOT a great student,
AB>like I said before in this message, BUT, I am really really wise in the
AB>area that I would like to have a job in, which is computer programming!
Now here is the clue to what is really happening; if you
pay attention to what I'm about to say, you'll never need
"extra credit"..... If you're wise in computer programming,
then you're bright enough to be able to handle anything
high school throws at you. The reason you're wise in
programming is that:
a) You enjoy it, so you devote your full attention to it
when you're doing it.
b) You practice doing it outside of class; read about it;
discuss it, etc.
If you do the same thing in your other subjects, you'll
have the same success.... Also, you may be cheating those
other subjects by using ALL your free time working on
computer programming....
AB>And since I know that I need to do very very well in math, I try
AB>extra hard in this class, and if I don't understand one thing, I will
AB>ask the teacher for help!
That's fine... Now.... Start considering this "trying extra
hard" to be what you're SUPPOSED to be doing in ALL your
classes, ALL the time! If you do that, you'll be able to
achieve anything you want....
AB>I think that other kids that go to school should be more like
AB>this, and try to plan ahead for a future job, so they can go ahead, and
AB>get started on what they want to be! =)
Yep, but don't overlook the fact that most people end up
working in areas they didn't expect, and at jobs they
didn't train for. In other words, don't depend solely
on computer programming, but seek to have a well-rounded
education so you have options and aren't limiting yourself
to only one possible future...
