On a TP41 I replaced succesfully the 40 Giga disk it came with by an
Hitachi 80 Gig 72000. However, a few years later trying to do the same with
a TP43 (still IBM then) resulted in an error message at boot , IIRC saying
something like "this is not a suitable disk. some of your data may be
lost" - press enter to continue. Meaning booting and rebooting always
has to be attended. A cunning way of crippling hardware, as in the end it's
not comfortable to work with a system like that.
It seems all of the IBM were and Lenovo laptops are coming with a 40 or 60
giga disk have this "feature" build into the bios - the more
costly ones coming with larger disks don't.
So it's your call and your risk depending on your type of hardware.
