 Hi Jim,

  If your Brother MFC actually has a print controller built into it, 
rather than it being a host or "win" printer, it could well work with 
the IBM Generic Laserjet or Postscript driver as Brother have always 
liked to emulate these. You may not get the full resolution, but you may 
get it printing.

  If however it's  a "win printer" as is my MFC620CN, then all you'll 
get is data transferred but nothing printed. These can only ever work 
when some pre-processing is done on the PC. which is what the windows 
driver does and what CUPS+GutenPrint try to do. The fact that Brother 
provide CUPS drivers for their printers is a positive that may mean that 
they may work with the ported version of CUPS at some point.

By the way, I agree CUPS setup at present is a little complex.
