 We did that this past summer (a long drive across country (and back
 of course) from coastal Virginia to west central Minnesota.  Planning
 is everything for a long trip with a kid who has ADHD.  Count on
 making frequent stops - not necessarily EVERY rest area but often
 enough to let him run the excess(ive) energy off.  If you have a
 polaroid camera take plenty of film - this was my son's first trip
 out of Virginia - we have a picture of every "Welcome to ___" sign
 along the way and back including every "You Are Now Leaving ___"
 Instant gratification - no waiting to see himself standing by those
 signs.  We took a different route back.  Lots of reading material of
 his choice, his own radio/cassette/cd player WITH HEADPHONES and
 snacks, more snacks and don't forget the snacks.  We have one of
 those works off the battery coolers that was well stocked with juice
 and sodas that I stuck in the back of the van.  It was his job to
 dole out the goodies whenever anybody wanted something.  I don't
 think I would have undertaken that long a trip in a car.
