Hello
PCIe for video is not only 2 x 8 = 16 but is bidirectional, iirc. The
changeover to series type connection peripherals is fundamental and a true
major turning point in computing hardware. Having bought a fairly
cutting-edge rig right at the end of the AGP cycle abd subsequently having
to return the mobo for USB controller failure and finding that board, or
indeed any decent board still in stock that would utilize my expensive AGP
video card ended up costing me dearly. I ended up, and would have saved
considerably to have bitten the bullet and done it sooner had I realized
back then just how much of a crossroads AGP vs/ PCIe or more exactly Series
vs/ Parallel truly was/is, moving to the new series based system.
Now, with the hardware glut due to many variables but not the least of
which is the heavy hardware requirements of Vista causing a pre-emptive
speculation on a market run that has yet to occur, it is a cery
cost-effective time to make the move. One can go all the way and get a
bleeding edge system or moderate it at the cost of minimizing upgrade
possibilities by buying end-of-cycle CPU socket motherboards. For exanple
socket 939 boards that were elite top brand and modle selling at over $250
US can now be had brand new and fully warratied for under $100. Socket 939
processors of amazing power can be had also for under $100, even a few dual
cores, but truly huge discounts are possible on single core. Example - I
recently caught a sale at newegg that netted a Flagship CPU of only a year
ago, then $1200, for $240 !
It might be time to take advantage of such conditions to set yourself up
for the next 5-10 years. Odds are you won't regret it... at least as much
as the disappointment of buying into desperation, dead end adapters.
