Hi, Joe;

II> We have "Enhanced 911" here... it not only tells the operator your
II> name, address and phone number, but also other information, such as
II> handicaps, medical conditions or other things which a fire/rescue
II> person/crew should know, and that information is available to the
II> dispatcher within seconds after the call comes in.
JN> How does the dispatcher know the caller's name if they're at a pay
 JN> phone?

In that case, they would only know the number, location, and the fact that
it's a pay phone, plus whatever they could tell by listening.

JN> How does the dispatcher know the caller is handicapped or has some
JN> other medical problem if they use a pay phone?

We have the option of filling out a form, (available from the Sheriff's
office or the Police Dept.), that we put that information on, and it is
then entered into the dispatcher's computer.

JN> That's not the kinda data your local phone company is compiling.

True.

JN> Betcha all E911 gives the dispatcher is an address and phone number,
JN> and the rest of that data is in the communication center's computer.

Yes, it is held in the dispatcher's computer, but I don't know if it
comes up on the same screen as the address, phone # etc., or another one.

JN> That's the sort of information the fire companies gather when they're
JN> out of the station conducting pre-fire inspections and planning.

Actually, I don't think the Fire Dept. records any of this information
when they make their routine inspections.

JN> ... 9-1-1...If you are calling to report a fire, press 1 now.....

It's possible that it could come to this some day, though I don't think
that most people would stop to think of that in an emergency situation.

Catch you later... Happy New Year.
   Ivy

... 9-1-1, press 1 for murder, 2 for rape, 3 for...
... In case of 9-1-1, call FIRE............ No, wait...
