true... it never did, TTBOMK... none of that information is sent to the
receiving end... the receiving end has to specify the file name, too... the
only thing the protocol carries is the blocks of data, 128 bytes at a time,
wrapped in the xmodem packet structure making 132 byte packets... the first
xmodem packet is numbered one (that's important!)... if the data being
transferred isn't a multiple of 128 bytes, the last block is padded out to
128 bytes... modem (the original) and xmodem (modem with quiet mode) are
extremely simple protocols...

modem7 was the first extension of xmodem... it added batch transfer
capabilities by sending the raw file name before the first data packet...
telink, by tom jennings(!), fixed a problem with modem7 where the raw file
name may be corrupted by noise on the line during transmission... telink
sends a zero packet first instead of a one packet... this zero packet is a
standard 132 byte xmodem packet with 128 bytes of data... that data just
happens to be the file's name, size and date... that's the first time that
a file's specific information is sent to the remote ;)

wow... i can't believe i remembered most of that... i had to dig into my
sources and a couple of notes to tie it together easily... i wonder what
other tidbits of info are stored in the dank dark places of my mind
