Replying to a message of Steve Ewing to Robert Comer: SE> ISTR the British learning the downside to an all-missile ship when the SE> time came to bombard the Falkland beaches. >> I think the old Battleship idea is still a good one for stuff like >> that... - Bob Comer So do I. When New Jersey was off South Vietnam she was worth a couple of squadrons of fighter-bombers to the grunts. She didn't care whether it was day or night, what the weather was like, had virtually unlimited loiter time, and could put bigger bangs - and more of them - more accurately and in a smaller geographical area than could the aircraft, and she could handle multiple targets simultaneously. Which is why, of course, she was taken off station and put back into mothballs - the North Vietnamese complained and Nixon acceded to their demand. ---* Origin: Bob's Soapbox, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, USA (1:379/103.104) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/103 1 633/267 |
