Our Govt does seem trigger-happy on threats to national security, witness
their treatment of Ahmed Zaoui, which was not popular. But in the current
case, the deportation was likely at the "request" of the US Govt:

"Immigration Minister David Cunliffe said Mr Ali was directly
associated with people responsible for the 2001 attacks in the United
States.

Mr Ali reportedly flatted in Arizona with Hanjour, who flew American
Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

The men also reportedly used a flight simulator together less than three
months before the attacks.

Mr Ali is named 13 times in a 9/11 Commission report and appears on FBI
suspect lists.

He has never been charged, however.

Apparently, two spellings of Mr Ali's first name - Rayed in FBI lists but
Raed on his passport - allowed him to slip into New Zealand undetected in
February."

The argument in NZ centres not on his involvement with 9/11 but on the
likelihood of him being a threat to our national security. Even if he is in
training for an aircraft-related terrorist act, he's not likely to commit
the act here. He should have been deported under a different law. I suspect
our Govt wanted to avoid a repeat of the Ahmed Zaoui case.
