They were faster in a server as they could/can hand synchronous
speeds as well as multiple users due to the onboard cache, which is
what the RAM's for. In a single user setup your milage would
vary depending on what you were using in relation to disk access
and concurrent read/writes. Also depends on the paramenters set
in the card BIOS, the type of RAID you chose to use etc but I
do know that these 300Gb SATA disks I'm now using are just as
fast if not faster but then the space the heads have to travel is
greatly reduced in relation to the much smaller SCSI disks I use
to use.

SCSI still wins hands down for mean time between failures.
