The Williams father didn't have any tennis ambitions in his youth. His
tennis ambitions sparked when he saw some people on TV hand a not so
athletic looking white girl a check for $30,000 for playing tennis. That's
when he told his wife they were going to have some more children. He was
lucky they turned out to be girls because its doubtful he could have pulled
this feat off with boys and the men's tour.

Actually, the Williams sisters had a far more normal childhood than most
tennis prodigy. They both completed high school. They were kept out of
official "junior" tennis in the USA, which meant they weren't
constantly preparing for and playing in tennis tournaments from the time
they were 10 years old. Compared to modern female tennis phenoms they
probably had the most normal schedule and life since Chris Evert.
(Assuming you can call life with Richard Williams normal, but they would
have had the Richard Williams factor to contend with whether they played
tennis or not).

Still the fact remains, this uneducated black man accomplished in a
population size of 4 what the entire British Isle has been unable to
accomplish in 100 years.
