In the very beginning, the public health workers had a severe shortage.
At that time Focci and others asked that the public not hoard the K95
masks so the the health workers could have them.  Then as other cloth
coverings became more available, it was said that all should wear masks.
That is the response to your last sentence above.

And wearing a mask helps to prevent your spreading the virus to others.
You may well have the virus and be infectious, but not know it.  It does
also provide some protection to your getting infected.

Trump is easily recognizable with or without a mask.  Who is he hurting
by not wearing a mask?  He is hurting all Americans who follow his
example, encouraging them to not bother wearing a mask -- thus possibly
spreading the infection to others that they come in contact with.  A
good leader leads by example.  Trump is not doing that.
