Something like that.  He was obviously betrayed, hence the comment about
the reward being paid.

The interesting question is: "Why?"

For the money?  It's a lot of hard currency, after all.

By one of his own side, to get rid of him?  He seems to have revolted even
them - toleration of his gross and gratuitous violence might mark them down
once the talks start.

By one of the other sides?  Without an air force of their own, the US one
came in pretty handy.
