It's more than enough to know that something is very fishy. Why did we get
that little snippet about him trying to escape from the stretcher? On the
face of it, a detail at the same level as the make of boots he was wearing.

Nah. Now we have another little detail suggested:

"One Iraqi witness has come forward and told reporters a man
resembling al-Zarqawi was pulled from an ambulance by U.S. troops and
beaten before he died."

So now it's "pulled from and ambulance and beaten to death".
Why, I wonder, do I find this version of events so probable? He survived
the attack with minor injuries, but the capturing forces were told not to
bring him back alive.

The "trying to escape" nugget was put in the original story to
prepare for a "resisting arrest" death.

The witness is named:

"According to Ahmed he and his neighbors had put al-Zarqawi in the
ambulance car. However, a few minutes after that the US soldiers arrived,
took him out of the car and started hitting him on the head."

The USA really has developed an aversion to fair trials.
