You can get the best VALUE in a parrot by purchasing it directly from a
breeder. The Sunday paper in a lot of areas includes ads from bird breeders
in the classified section.
A young, weaned, hand-fed baby bird purchased from a breeder is a wonderful
pet. Hand-fed birds do not need to be tamed. They already regard humans as
sources of food and comfort.
There is some problem with people posing as breeders and offering smuggled
baby birds for sale. You do not want a smuggled bird. It is illegal and
might be carrying a disease. Refuse to buy any young parrot that does not
have a solid, closed band on one leg. These bands can be put on the parrots
only when they are a few days old, and are ALMOST a guarantee that the bird
was hatched in captivity. You may also want to quiz the breeder about where
they get their breeding stock, who their vet is, what tests they run on new
birds, and how long they quarantine new birds before putting them in with the
rest of their breeding stock.
You will also see adult birds for sale in the classifieds, some at very cheap
prices. However, as many others here will attest to, a free or almost free
bird is rarely so. Many of these birds are ill and need extensive, expensive
veterinary care to recover. Also, sometimes people want to get rid of their
birds fast and cheap because the birds have very bad habits. The bird may be
a problem biter, may hate people, or may otherwise not be a very good
companion.
I've bought birds that weren't hand-fed babies. The first time I bought a
hand-fed, domestic bred baby parrot, the difference was so drastic I swore I
would never buy anything else.
