You certainly have read the comment by our doyen Steve.
So what I wrote is valid for plain old IDE too: the audio data stream
travels through the IDE cable too and it is supported since Warp 4 and
maybe already earlier. If your hardware (mobo and sound system) supports
it, you'll have sound and it it that what happened to you.
Just try to remember out of a CD/DVD only comes digital data; you need a
D/A converter to make it "hearable".
Of course when there is an outlet for a headset the CD/DVD player has a
small and cheap inbuild D/A converter. And likely then there will be an
outlet to an analogue input too.
Remember too, there are CD/DVD players around costing 10000 euro/dollar
with no inbuild D/A converter at all. :-)
