It wouldn't be a bad idea to stuff some newspapers or towels into the case to
take up any space, especially behind the headstock and neck, but the real
killer of guitars is rough handling by the airport baggage crews. I've made
a number of trips to Oregon just tossing the cases in the back of my Escort
wagon or Toyota pickup without any special treatment and haven't had any
problems. I think a bus is a bit smoother than the back of a small pickup.
Be careful with the weather though... be sure to check ahead and make sure
the baggage compartment will remain DRY during the trip. Temperature
variations shouldn't be much of a problem, though it'll most likely be out of
tune when you get there.
If at all possible, see if they'll let you carry it on with you, and if they
can't guarantee that it'll remain dry, demand to carry it on or don't take
