I do not understand your problem.

This will break your msgbase incompatible to any other config without that
automatic address translation/manipulation.

"change back", then that user name is correct? If yes, you are
manipulating "in transit" mail and you put a time bomb into your
msgbase.

If the user name is not correct for incoming mails, change the config at
the source of the wrong names. Make the originally author use correct
names.
