But for the fact that certain OSes cannot boot except from a primary,
there is no good reason to distinguish a primary from a logical.
Primaries are logical disk subdivisions, as are logicals logical disk
subdivisions. Once boot has occurred, no OS knows or cares of the
distinction between them. The extended is nothing but a placeholder
marking where "the" partition table continues.
