-> *3 BLAZING OLD TRAILS: CHARTER SCHOOL STRESSES PHONICS
-> The Ball Foundation, located in Glen Ellyn, Ill., is
-> planning to create a charter school that stresses the "old-
-> fashioned" way of teaching reading, by using phonics (Banas,
-> Chicago TRIBUNE, 10/21). If approved, the

-> for DuPage County.
-> "We need to develop an old-fashioned elementary school,"
I wonder how old this old fashioned school idea really is?
I think I learned during the "See it and say it" years. That is not phonics.
I wonder when the term "phonics" first came about. I imagine that it is
realitively new when compaired to other teaching methods.
I tend to agree with Dan that a balanced approach is better. In fact, I
think phonics instruction carried on too late in life will lead to people who
read orally perfectly, but comprehend little of what they read. Phonics
instruction to an older child is a death-threat to his reading improvement,
IMO.
