Hello Kevin
  I have one box with 4 Pata drives (onboard controller) that also has a
pci card Sata adaptor with 2 internal and 2 external ports.  I put together
a nice CoolGear enclosure which has it's own power supply and fan, having
two 5 1/2 inch bays one loaded with a Plextor PX716A SATA DVD burner and a
Seagate 500GB drive on adapter rails.  Not only will these two boxes work
together nicely, It is even possible to boot from both SATA devices despite
the fact that they are external.
  Additionally I have another box with a Pata DVD and hdd (onboard
controller) and also 2 Sata hdd's (also onboard controller).  BTW I also
bought and installed 2 SATA adapter ports which creates external ports from
onboard controller headers.
