I found a pristine copy of WP 5.1 manual and copied the
following from p. 174:
To create a directory alias, first make sure you are in a blank
normal editing screen, then follow these steps.
1. They the full name pf the directory to which you want to
give an alias (e.g. C:\wp51\work), then press End Field (F9).
2. Type a descri[tive directory alias name. Then press End FIeld
(F9).
3. Press Merge Codes (Shift F9) the select End Record (2)
The directory alias can be up to 68 characters, including
spaces. The first 30 can be displayed in the List Files Long
Display screen.
