All, hdc's in the early days MFM, RLL, ESDI (esdi is really rll) had the ll format utility burned in its eprom programming and it was accessed by jumping to the execution address entry point using DEBUG. AT-IDE drives made it impossible to do a ll format without a special utility and from what I've heard some ide drives could not be ll formatted at all. Glad to have taught you some useless trivia!
