Well neither Alpha nor the Beta can penetrate the skin. But when inhaled
or Injested the Alpha particle is by far the most damaging.

->  It's the Gamma rays that will do you in, and even those

For external application it is the Gamma Ray that does pass through the
body killing on it's way. Then it becomes a matter of the Gamma Level
and exposure time that determines the long term damage..
Adn despite it's popularity in the "Nuclear Day" presentation og the TV
and Movie screens they cannot make one "Glow in the Dark". Even it you
are gamma radiated into cinders. :-)
