 If they were 1N400X diodes, that's a pretty poor
design. 3 Amps would likely fry them early on, let
alone 5 Amp pulses. I guess that could explain his
current (pun intended) situation. I suspect that
they were rated for more than 1 Amp.

 I think I'd likely get a large bridge and just use
that to replace the diodes, or get those 6 Amp 50 V
diodes that RS has dirt cheap.
