SK> -> *1 EDUCATION: A NATIONAL CURRICULUM FOR A NATIONAL PRIORITY?
SK> -> Education has edged out the economy, the environment and
SK> -> even crime as the issue that concerns most Americans, writes Sara
SK> -> Mosle in the N.Y. TIMES MAGAZINE (10/27). However, the two
SK> -> candidates for President appear only interested in debating
SK> -> variations of school choice as a remedy for what ails public
SK> -> education, according to Mosle.
SK> -> For Mosle, choice without standards is no choice at all.
"Choice without standards is no choice at all"?
Why should that be true in K-12 education, when it isn't true in any
other major purchase? Cars have only safety standards to meet, and consumers
can choose (rationally or not) between four-door-five-passenger cars and
Camaros!
SK> -> for, more local control," she muses. Mosle also challenges
SK> -> voucher proponents by observing that a voucher plan instituted by
SK> the
SK> -> Dutch has resulted in "the least consistent school quality in
SK> -> northern continental Europe."
But they still outperform America on international comparisons, so the
Dutch aren't doing that bad.
