I've also seen pieces of paper torn in various ways used.  One can 
usually hide how one is gearing a piece of paper.  most often, 
there were two candidates and one was designated by drawing straws 
as being represented by whole squares of paper and the other was 
then designated by that same square with a corner torn out.
