2.5" is a laptop drive... desktop drives are 3.5" wide.

Are you talking laptop or desktop?

Either way - $559 for 60GB is insane.

I think "heck" is far too weak a word to apply to a $559 price compared
to what you should pay... :)

About $60 for 80GB in 3.5" is quite reasonable... you didn't say how
much you want to add, but you don't need to retire the old drive if
you're just adding space, though. Chances are with a 40GB you're
talking ATA and have to worry about Master/Slave settings... set the
CD-ROM or DVD in the system to slave and put the new drive on the same
cable (if the existing hard drive and optical drive are on different
cables, that is), and it should boot up, and add that much space to the
new one.

With a laptop, you don't have a choice in most - there's only one spot
to put a new hard drive, and you'll have to replace the old one, not add
to it. With an adapter, you can copy the old partition to a new drive
using a desktop system, or I'd be happy to discuss doing this for you if
you give me a shout.

Hope this helps!
