SCHOOL UNIFORMS? DO THEY INCLUDE YOUR KID'S HAIR?
Rickover Junior High, a school in Sauk Village, Illinois that
had already adopted school uniforms, has prohibited students from
wearing hairstyles including braids, cornrows, and dreadlocks.
Girls may not wear hair beads.
Superintendant Thomas Ryan said the policy is to avoid
students mimicking the "gang look".
But how does a girl coloring her hair or
wearing hair beads mean she's a gang member?
All the superintendant has to do to learn that
none of these hairstyles are characteristics
of teen gangs is to go to a post office and
look at both workers and customers. Even the
local police chief in his town says hairstyles
signifying gang membership are rare.
School-uniform advocates on up to Bill Clinton claim uniforms
work wonders in reducing gang activity. But here's a school that
already had a very strict uniform policy that even included banning
sneakers outside of gym class, and it now says it has to impose a
"hair uniform" to further fight gang problems.
Get your kid to jail before the tardy bell rings!
