DOS _is_ Microsoft. I realize there are clones of DOS but the
software you are using would've never been written if not for
MSDOS. Your DOS-only system is courtesy of Bill Gates and
Microsoft. Without their efforts you would have no software to
use on your DOS-only system.

That's a fairly large 'only' you have there. Take away email
and the WWW and there isn't much that remains for the average
user. ARCHIE servers are almost extinct and most don't like
GOPHER servers. Telnet'g to BBS and other systems could be done
but isn't really what I would call 'popular' with no universal
user interface when you get there. Usenet has potential but
unrealized IMO and after all these years I seriously doubt
usenet will ever be more than it is now. 

IRC is a 'bad neighborhood' where children pirate software and
music files ICQ/AIM/ and other 'messenger' connections seem
destined for clandestine meetings for unhappy married persons
to fantasize that they have a life. A bit depressing really. 

Email and the WWW can be done using DOS btw. I did it for over
a year at the start and have maintained that software to this
day. I use it now and then to verify that access to my website
(tech) is doable from DOS.  You might enjoy the website it
links to all that I have used and has a very good external
link to a DOS games website.
