subject: FAT16/32 vs. NTFS

-> What are the benefits of using NTFS over FAT16 and 32? Any drawbacks
-> (including compatibility issues)? What if I will be sharing the
-> drives over an MS-based network that includes Win9x and DOS (and
-> possibly Linux and OS/2) machines?

Better disk space allocation with NTFS
It's journalled, so it'll recover easier than FAT
It's *not* DOS compatible (unless you buy a DOS NTFS driver), so forget
about booting from a DOS/W9x floppy and having disk access.
No problem sharing, sharing doesn't care what kind of drive you have.
NTFS has user permissions, so if you mess those up you might have to go
to administrator to reset them.
Short file name variants of long file names could be problematic

-> It looks like I may have to re-install Windows on my main file and print
-> share "server" and I am trying to figure out if I want to
re-install 98,
-> with FAT32, or if I want to install NT 4.0 (with FAT16 or NTFS). Opinions
-> are welcome.  ;-)

Win2k, then you get the choice. And no pesky activiation crap.
NT4 and 98 don't really have much different requirements, owing to NT4
being so old. But installing NT4 can be a pain because you have to apply
service packs and it doesn't start as NTFS, instead it starts as FAT16
that converts to NTFS aftwards.
