Hi Bill:
Congrads on your new R1...fellow R1 owner. I'm happy with mine and
wish you enjoyment with yours. Suggestions: go with a standard moly
tune (Beeman does fine or get Tom Gaylord's R1 book and do it yourself
with his instructions....get lubes from Beeman or Maccari or both).
READ Tom's superb R1 book carefully....also it talks about the Vortek
gas spring, the Beeman Laserization tune, the Maccari R1 kit, and the
Venomac Lazaglide. All reasonably close in price. You want power,
forget the Laserization tune. I had the Beeman shop give my R1 (.177)
a full Laserization tune....result, 750 fps with Cros Prem Heavies & 890
fps with Cros Prem Lites. Later, Paul Watts put in a Vortek1/Maccari
C.O.P. piston seal and a Maccari power R1 spring....result, 800 fps with
Cros Prem Heavies and 970 fps with Cros Prem Lites. I am told that
that is low powered for a Maccari kit....that the "chamfer" Beeman
drilled into the air transfer port may have lost me some power. Don't
do the chamfer....at least not until I install the new R1
receiver/cylinder and end cap (with stock air transfer port) and retest
with the same components. Also, I have heard that the Beeman Laserlube
dries and hardens after a couple years or so in the airarm. Also, I
had chronic dieseling problems with my Beeman Laserization tune....maybe
they made the piston seal too loose or something....beats me....but
performance was inferior. I've got a Venomac Mach1 trigger block and a
Venomac Trophy stock along with a Venomac brass trigger guard.....their
stuff is top drawer quality! If you have a .20 cal or above, try the
Lazaglide kit....Tim McMurray of Mac1 will install it for around $200
total. Personally, I like Maccari springs as I don't need a spring
compressor as they shrink down and still hold power. But if Tim
McMurray personally installs a Venomac Lazaglide kit.....and you treat
it gently (lube as instructed & don't keep it cocked for more than about
5 minutes at a time), you should have a superb hunter potential R1 to
last you many years. But remember, the extra power of any power kit
tune will increase cocking effort.....except maybe for a Maccari R1
"light" spring which will give about 900 fps with .177 Cros Prem
Lites....and very pleasant cocking/firing characteristics.
