 I learned in ABC Warfare School (before NBC replaced ABC)
 that Alpha particle were the least damaging because they
 can't penetrate the skin.  Beta was next in the list, and
 can be stopped with a layer of normal clothing.

 It's the Gamma rays that will do you in, and even those
 can be stopped with a well constructed concrete barrier.

 Remember all the bomb shelters built during the Cuban
 missle scare?  You could spot one driving through any
 neighborhood by the vent sticking up from a lawn.  
 I'd guess all the people who had them constructed now
 own some very expensive wine cellars.
