Bennett proposed to produce a theatrical movie in which Kirk, Spock,
McCoy, etc., were recast with young actors, and shown while they were
attending Starfleet Academy.
Fans rejected the idea -- I think *both* because they didn't like the
idea of new actors in the parts, and because Star Trek continuity is
clear that these characters are different ages, and did not attend the
Academy together. Spock and McCoy are around the same age, but they are
10 years older than Kirk. Scotty is in between. Chekov, Sulu, et al,
are even younger than Kirk. No way would they all be at the Academy
together -- or if so, it would have to be a pretty artificial
contrivance.
